Never Get Involved in a Land War in Asia

More posting to come today on the feast and the letter for the day (B) but for the moment I wanted to share one of the great scenes (they’re ALL great really) from The Princess Bride. It’s one of our favorite movies. [I love Miracle Max but embedding was disabled. Remember “mostly dead”?]

My thinking is so like Vizzini’s sometimes. I think myself into a corner and get nowhere.

While I was posting this, Father, independently, was writing his own post. When I read it I shrieked because it fit the video perfectly. So, he added the video to his post and I’m adding the quotation to mine:

Wisdom does not consist in speaking; wisdom means knowing the time
when you should speak and when to reply as necessary. Make it seem that
you know nothing, although you have knowledge, so as to avoid great
distress; for he who appears to
have knowledge lays burdens on himself.
Do not boast about your knowledge, for no one knows anything.

  1. Brilliant! I love that film. When I was working in Moscow, we had the students stage it as part of their English language training, and I was one of the directors, so I have that movie totally memorized!! The Russian guy that played the Cary Elwes part was devastatingly funny–just perfect comedic timing, even in a non-native language. It was so funny!

Have you read the book? Even better.

  2. Our family's favorite movie as well.

Hearing the dialogue in Russian would have been fun. What a neat experience.

In my younger days (15 years ago) I got to hear Mandy Patinkin in concert. He is the consummate entertainer, so the whole performance was wonderful. But the most memorable moment was when he delivered the classic “Hello, my name is Inigo Montoya…” line.
